Help & FAQ

Use the translator

The Translator is the home page. It uses the curated dictionary to map English words to Nyungar (Wudjari) words and vice versa.

  1. Choose the translation direction.
  2. Type or paste the text to translate.
  3. Submit to see the matched words; tap a word to hear its audio if available.
If a word isn't recognised it stays as-is in the result. You can suggest a translation for unknown words from the Translator page.

The Dictionary page lists every entry available to the translator, with audio for words that have been recorded.

  • Search to find a specific word in either language.
  • Filter alphabetically.
  • Play the male or female audio recording where available.

Use the search box to jump to a topic. The small help (?) button next to each page heading opens a short summary and links here.

Manage dictionary

The Manage Dashboard is the starting point for everyone with a manage role. It surfaces high-level audio and dictionary counts and links to every management task.

  • Counts of audio recordings (English / Nyungar)
  • Quick links to upload audio, manage audio, add words, and review suggestions

  1. Pick the word and the language (English or Nyungar).
  2. Pick whether this is a male or female recording.
  3. Choose the audio file and submit.
Audio is stored in Azure Blob storage and served via the audio button next to the word in the Translator and Dictionary pages.

Use this page to review every recording attached to a word. Each entry shows the word, the language, the speaker gender, and a delete action.

Deleting a recording removes it from storage and from the audio buttons on the Translator and Dictionary pages. To replace a recording, delete the old one and re-upload.

There are two ways to add to the dictionary:

  • Single word: type the English and Nyungar forms and submit.
  • Bulk upload: upload an .xlsx or .csv file. Each row becomes one entry.
For bulk upload, the file should have two columns: English and Nyungar. The first row can be a header.

  1. Open a pending suggestion to see who proposed it and when.
  2. Approve to add it to the dictionary, or decline to reject.
  3. Approved entries become available in the Translator immediately.
